Filmfestival globale08

The 5th globale will take place from the 15th until 21st of Oktober 2008. Our main event location this year is the cinema Kino Moviemento in Kreuzberg/Neukölln, where also our festival centre will be located.

The main themes of the globale08 are:

Migration
The precarious lot of migrants and the conditions under which they live in “Fortress Europe” – the historic connection between immigration, labour
and population policies.

Food
Who’s really having a food crisis? Seed monopolies, the global fight of farmers for self-determination and the disastrous effects of biofuel production.

G8 and Protest
Being active in the G8 protests in Heiligendamm, the globale would like to invite self-reflexive discussion on the current state and future of the
movement, the forms of protest and the effectiveness of media activism.

Gentrification and Lifestyle Apartheid
Mediaspree Berlin, the Mission District in San Francisco, gated communities in Antalya and Alicante: „Gentrification“ and the desire for „distinctive“ lifestyles are not natural givens yet function according to market logic, are politically intended and forced.

Work, Precarity, “Social Fabric”
Work as exploitation, unemployment as a means to apply pressure – films and discussions about increasingly precarious existences including positions by labour activists, nonconformists and workers of a factory coop.

globale is a Berlin collective of political activists, journalists, filmmakers, students, film aficionados and others, who organize an annual political film festival. globale intends to create awareness for social and economic injustices and increase solidarity among politically active groups and individuals world-wide. globale positions itself as an active member in the network of social movements critical of "globalization-as-we-know-it", and is well connected locally and internationally.

The 5th globale is to take place from 15th to 21st of Octobre 2008. For one week globale fills two cinemas and a festival centre and regularly attracts an audience of some 3 to 4 thousand people and has gained some recognition as the current festival linking filmculture, critical view on globalization and political activism. The goal is to reach out to a public beyond the "usual aspects" and the "already converted". As a political festival, globale does more than merely show films but invites guests, activists, experts to discuss and broaden the topics presented by the films. The film programme is complemented and enhanced by day-long workshops, focus panels, audience discussions after the screenings as well as thematic activities and interventions at other venues or in public space. Focus events and actions might also take place in collaboration with other groups beyond the defined festival period and at different locations.

globale is meant to be an open and productive platform for filmmakers and activists to discuss their work, share project ideas, and create collaborations. Depending on the festival’s varying budget, travel expenses for invited guests can at least partly be covered. globale pays screening fees to the filmmakers for each screening of the selected films.

Each globale programme creates a cluster of focus topics. Likely topics of globale08 are: global working conditions & strategies of resistance and self-organization and »visions of labor«; the politics of privatization and local forms of collective counter-activism; migration politics and border regimes; neo-liberal ideologies and their impact on every-day life; a (self-)critical look at media activism and its relation to the "movement". A special interest of the globale has always been on films from geographical or social contexts which are regularly neglected by mainstream media and the global film business and who therefore suffer misrepresentation in the global image production.

A selection of each year's festival programme is offered (in accord with the filmmakers) as a repertoire package to cinemas. This has resulted in a network of cinemas in Germany and neighbouring countries presenting globale films and programmes throughout the year.

Now here is your part of the game: Send us your films! Help us in finding films that fit the globale profile and focus. Encourage politically active filmmakers to send us their films or simply tell us about films you have seen. Forward this Call For Entries to your activist and filmmaker friends and acquaintances around the world, people you think might have knowledge about or access to possible "globale films". All genres - documentary, shorts, clips, activists-films, feature films - in any format are welcome. All submitted film copies should be accompanied by some basic information: production dates, director, producer, person submitting, contact person, as well as a short synopsis. Please do not handwrite these and please label the DVDs, discs, or tapes you send.

Join globale

globale is open to anyone who wants to participate, following a few basic principles: no formal hierarchies, no sexism, no racism, no anti-semitism, no exploitative practices. Decisions are made through consensus. We all work on a voluntary basis; the festival itself is financed by foundations, public funds, local support, and solidarity groups. No sponsoring by commercial interests. Throughout the year we try to support political campaigns and events with our knowledge and our growing film archive.
