What is globale ?
globale is a Berlin collective of political activists, journalists, filmmakers, students, film aficionados, and others. Since 2003 we have been putting together an annual political film festival with a critical perspective on globalization . Regular festival topics reflected in the films include: capitalist exploitation, migration, racism, social exclusion, neo-colonialism, and war, but also various forms of resistance and self-organization. globale sees itself as an active member in the global network of social movements and is well connected both locally and internationally.
The 4th globale will take place from May 10 to 16, 2007, in the Central and Nickelodeon cinemas in Berlin-Mitte. The festival center will be in the “Neurotitan” gallery in the “Haus Schwarzenberg.”
As a political film festival, globale, does more than merely show films. All films are presented with an introduction and usually complemented by audience discussions and focus workshops. For one week, globale fills two cinemas and a festival center, regularly attracting some 4,000 visitors and participants. Filmmakers and activists are invited to discuss their work, share ideas, and form collaborations. The festival is meant to be a platform for political filmmakers and video activists. It offers political projects the opportunity to communicate their goals to an interested public and broaden their networks. Complimenting the evening programme, “junge globale” (young globale) offers special afternoon programmes for schools and students.
globale is a non-profit event and organization. Our work is based on voluntary and unpaid commitment and inspired by each individual member’s political and motivational background. Our decision-making follows grass-roots democratic principles.
Besides this voluntary input, globale is largely dependent on financial support from public funds and institutions. Various companies and private supporters make contributions as well.
The film festival is the main focus and annual climax of our work. However, globale intends to keep its issues in public awareness even after the festival is over, and to provide globale films with a maximum of attention. We offer a selection of each year’s festival programme – in accord with the filmmakers, producers, or distributors – as a globale repertoire package to cinemas. This has led to a growing network of cinemas presenting globale films throughout the year - in Germany and neighbouring countries, but recently also at special occasions in India, Latin America, and the USA. Furthermore, globale collaborates with and supports political events and activities where a critical awareness for social and political problems can be enhanced through film.
